You do not need to book, apply or know the rules. Turn up to any training day at Nogometno igrišče Dobrova, a short drive west of Ljubljana, and you are in: your first week of training is free.

Where and when

We train at Nogometno igrišče Dobrova in Šujica, Dobrova pri Ljubljani. Sessions run 18:00–19:30, or 17:30–19:00 when the sun sets earlier.

  • Monday and Wednesday: flag football, mandatory for members
  • Tuesday: sprinting, optional
  • Thursday: technical training, optional
  • Saturday: by arrangement, when there are no games

The season runs from mid-August to the end of June. We are outdoors from mid-August to October and from March to June, and indoors from December to February. November is a free month with no club training.

What to bring

  • A white t-shirt
  • Shorts without pockets
  • A bottle of water
  • Cleats (we no longer lend them)

That is it. The club supplies the flags and the balls. After your free week, the training fee covers the rental of shirts, shorts and game jerseys; see what it costs.

What kind of sport you are walking into

Flag football is the non-contact version of American football: five players a side, no tackling and no blocking. To stop someone you pull a flag off their belt, and the play is over where the flag comes off. The rules guide explains the whole game in one page, but you can follow your first session without studying anything.

Who you will train with

Ljubljana Frogs is a men's club for players aged 16 and over, with no previous flag football experience needed. Under-18s need parental consent. A large part of the squad is international, with 15+ nationalities and Erasmus students among them. Training runs in Slovene and English, so you do not need any Slovene.

After your first week

You can keep coming for €10 a session, or move to the monthly fee and the €50 season membership. Attendance lowers the monthly fee, and the cost guide shows exactly how. If you are new to Ljubljana, read the Erasmus guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need flag football experience?

No. We see basketball players, handball players, sprinters and track athletes do well, and the coaches help you find your place on the field.

Can I just turn up?

Yes. No appointment and no application are needed first. If you prefer to write first, use the form on the join page.

What language is training in?

Slovene and English.

Is flag football safe for a beginner?

It is non-contact by design, which is why it is played in mixed-ability groups worldwide. Travel insurance is mandatory for everyone who travels with the team.

Who can I contact before I come?

Write to [email protected], or call or message +386 69 685 482 (WhatsApp included).
