For a student-athlete, the best exchange is not simply the university with the biggest name. It is the place where courses fit the Learning Agreement, daily life remains manageable, and training becomes part of a real weekly routine.

Ljubljana’s higher-education market is led by the University of Ljubljana (UL), Slovenia’s oldest and largest university. In 2025 it reported 38,383 students, 4,230 foreign degree students and 2,534 incoming exchange students across 23 faculties and three art academies.

Best UL member by subject

Sport-science students should begin with the Faculty of Sport. Business students should examine the School of Economics and Business; developers and data students, the Faculty of Computer and Information Science (FRI); communications and political-science students, the Faculty of Social Sciences (FDV). The Faculty of Law, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and the engineering faculties broaden the options further.

Important: Erasmus agreements at UL are concluded at faculty level. A general partnership with UL does not automatically give access to every faculty or every English-taught course. Start with the exchange coordinator at your home university and match the receiving faculty to your degree.

Big university. Human-scale city.

The published club schedule combines two mandatory field sessions with optional athletic and technical development.

Why stay for both semesters?

  1. You complete a meaningful academic cycle. At UL, one full academic year represents 60 ECTS, compared with 30 ECTS for one semester. That gives more room to sequence courses and protect the Learning Agreement from timetable changes.
  2. You stop living like a visitor. The first months are consumed by paperwork, housing, transport and new routines. The second semester is when language confidence, friendships and local knowledge begin to compound.
  3. Your flag football development has continuity. A player can progress from learning terminology and playbook responsibilities to contributing in competition instead of leaving just as team chemistry develops.
  4. You experience more of Slovenia and Europe. Ljubljana is a practical base for regional travel, but a full year reduces the pressure to turn every weekend into tourism.

Train with Ljubljana Frogs

Ljubljana Frogs is a men’s club for players aged 16 and over. No previous flag football experience is required. Training runs in Slovenian and English, and the club explicitly welcomes Erasmus students and athletes coming from other sports.

Training is at the football ground in Šujica, Dobrova pri Ljubljani. Bring a white T-shirt, pocketless shorts, water and cleats. Women seeking a team can ask the Frogs for an introduction to the women’s programme at Domžale Tigers.

Arrive as an exchange student. Leave as a teammate.

The first session does not require a perfect résumé, a highlight video or previous American-football experience. It requires showing up ready to learn.

Why Ljubljana works

Ljubljana combines a large student population with short urban distances, extensive green space and access to the rest of Slovenia. It was European Green Capital in 2016, and official tourism information reports 542 square metres of green space per resident.

For budgeting, the official Study in Slovenia guide currently lists a Ljubljana city-bus ticket at €1.50 for 90 minutes and a student monthly pass at €25. Housing is the variable that requires the earliest planning, especially before the autumn semester.

A realistic student-athlete week

Reserve daytime blocks for classes and group work; keep Monday and Wednesday evenings protected for team practice; use Tuesday or Thursday for optional athletic development; and leave one recovery window before weekend fixtures or travel. A sustainable routine beats an overfilled Erasmus calendar.

How to make it happen

  1. Check the agreement. Ask your home coordinator which Ljubljana institution and receiving faculty are covered by your Erasmus agreement.
  2. Build the Learning Agreement. Select courses from the receiving faculty’s exchange catalogue and check semester, language, prerequisites and timetable compatibility.
  3. Secure the nomination. Your home university must nominate you before you complete the receiving institution’s application.
  4. Apply on time. UL’s published deadline is 15 May for the winter semester or full academic year and 15 November for the summer semester. Other institutions set their own dates.
  5. Prepare documents. UL lists a transcript, Online Learning Agreement, language evidence and ID/passport copy; English or Slovenian at B2 is normally required.
  6. Contact the Frogs early. Share your arrival month, playing experience, position and academic calendar so training can become part of the plan rather than an afterthought.

Questions Erasmus players ask

Do I need flag football experience?

No. Ljubljana Frogs states that previous flag football experience is not required. Athletes from basketball, handball, athletics, rugby, soccer and other sports can transfer useful movement and tactical skills.

Can I train without speaking Slovenian?

Yes. Training is conducted in Slovenian and English, and the roster includes international players and Erasmus students.

Is the University of Ljubljana one campus?

No. UL is distributed across the city through 23 faculties and three art academies. Check the location of your receiving faculty when choosing housing and planning the trip to Dobrova.

Can I take courses from several UL faculties?

Sometimes, but never assume automatic access. Your nomination is faculty-specific, and attendance elsewhere depends on agreements, capacity, approval and timetable compatibility.

Is a full year automatically approved?

No. It must fit your home programme, Erasmus agreement, funding and receiving-institution rules. Start with your home exchange coordinator.
